Second Visit to Friends Seminary

New York, NY

The American International Education Development (AIED) Council School Outreach Specialist Martta Sareva and her team Erik Anderson and Stephanie Realegeno visited Friends Seminary on February 27, 2012.

Friends Seminary is a school for grades K-12th located a couple of blocks away from Union Square. Founded in 1786, it is one of the oldest coeducational schools in NYC. This time Ms.Sareva, Ms. Realegeno and Mr. Anderson met with the Head of Lower School Teri Hassid and the Head of Middle School Pankti Sevak to discuss future opportunities for AIED and Friends Seminary to work together.

Mrs. Hassid and Mrs. Sevak described the Mandarin language program they offer students at Friends Seminary. Ms. Hassid described how in the fifth grade, students are exposed to Mandarin three days a week in a 40 minute class.

The AIED team explained some possible programs that the school could benefit from and which could help students gain exposure to a different culture. Ms. Hassid and Mrs. Sevak are interested in implementing a project for their fifth grade through Upper School students who are learning Mandarin. This meeting was a chance to communicate a way Friends Seminary can take part in the programs AIED offers.
